WORLD DAY FOR SAFETY AND HEALTH AT WORK

WORLD DAY FOR SAFETY AND HEALTH AT WORK

April 28, 2023

The Progressive Labour Party joins with trade unions, employers, and the government in  recognition of the International Labour Organization (ILO)’s World Day for Safety and Health at  Work.

Since 2003, April 28 has been observed as part of an annual global campaign to promote occupational safety, health, and decent work.

The significance of this campaign was increased when the International Labour Conference (ILC)  voted to include “a safe and healthy working environment” in the ILO’s framework of  fundamental principles and rights at work. As a result, the Occupational Safety and Health  Convention, No. 155 and the Promotional Framework for Occupational Safety and Health  Convention, No. 187 were declared fundamental conventions in June 2022.

Here in Bermuda and across the globe, the Covid pandemic brought the importance of occupational  safety and health to the forefront. It also heightened the awareness that, as workers, unionists,  employers, and the government, we have a shared responsibility in not only ensuring safe work  environments but also creating and maintaining a preventive safety and health culture in the  workplace.

In recognition of the World Day for Safety and Health and the importance of safe workplaces, the  PLP encourages all stakeholders to familiarize themselves with their rights and responsibilities as  outlined in Bermuda’s legislated framework and supporting regulations.

In addition, interested persons are encouraged to learn more about the topic of a safe and healthy  working environment as a fundamental principle and right at work by taking part in a webinar hosted by the ILO that will take place on April 28, 2023 (click link for more details).

We each have an important role to play; together we are stronger.
