Good Day, Bermuda
How we care for our seniors is a measure of who we are as a society. For some, when times get tough, our seniors are first on the chopping block:
- First to be told, "money doesn't grow on trees." 🌳
- First to see their pensions frozen. ❄️
- First to see their FutureCare costs increased. 📈
- First to see their relief on licensing their vehicles slashed. 🚗
When times get tough, the OBA tells our seniors, "no way." 🚫 When times get tough, the PLP says, "we will find a way." 💪
Around the world 🌍, people are feeling the impact of an unprecedented cost of living crisis, and Bermuda has not been immune. We know that right now, in Bermuda, too many of our seniors are struggling. Too many families are feeling the pressure of trying to provide care while balancing work and financial responsibilities. And while we can't fix everything, we want to help. 🤝
For decades, our seniors worked hard, raised families, and built the Bermuda we live in today. They paid their dues. And now, when they deserve to retire with dignity and security, many of them are forced to worry about their basic needs. Many are worried about whether the next government will have their back. 🏠
We know what the others have done, but here is what we will do:
-
Constructing New Senior Daycare Facilities: 🏢
We are constructing at least one new senior daycare facility to support families who are struggling to balance work and caregiving. Right now, too many families don’t have access to affordable daytime care for their elderly loved ones. This new facility will provide affordable, high-quality care during the workweek—giving our seniors a safe, engaging environment while easing the financial burden on working families. -
Maintaining Pension Increases: 💰
We are maintaining our promise to increase pensions every single year to match inflation. No "ifs," no "ands," or "buts." -
Expanding Home Health and Senior Care Benefits: 🏡
We are expanding home health and senior care benefits under FutureCare and HIP. We know that most seniors want to stay in their homes for as long as possible. But home care can be expensive, difficult to access, and sometimes unreliable. That is why we are making it easier and more affordable for seniors to receive care in the comfort of their own homes—because no one should be forced out of their home simply because they cannot afford the care they need.
The bottom line is this: we cannot and will not abandon our seniors. We are going to fight to ensure that every single senior in Bermuda can age with dignity, financial security, and the quality care they deserve. That is what the Progressive Labour Party stands for, and that is what we will deliver. 🎉
Thank you. 🙏
