Setting the Record Straight: Responding to the OBA’s Throne Speech Critique

Today in Parliament, the One Bermuda Alliance (OBA) delivered their response to the PLP Government’s Throne Speech. While their speech was heavy on criticism and light on details, we welcome the opportunity to work together on areas of shared concern to build a fairer Bermuda for all.

Highlighting PLP’s Proven Progress

We note that many of the initiatives the OBA highlighted as priorities — including infrastructure upgrades, housing development, crime reduction, scholarships, and technical training — are not new proposals but areas where the PLP has already delivered measurable progress.

  • Housing Development:

    • 71 new affordable housing units have already been completed.

    • 118 more units are currently underway.

  • Social and Infrastructure Investments:

    • Over $25 million invested in projects including roads, community upgrades, and schools.

  • Vocational Education:

    • Expanded access to trades training through signature schools and increased apprenticeships.

    • Over $350,000 in scholarships awarded this year alone.

Reducing Red Tape and Enhancing Digital Services
  • Red Tape Reduction: Initiatives have reduced regulatory burdens and increased technology access.

  • Expanded Digital Services: Processing times have been reduced across multiple departments.

Addressing the Cost of Living: Real Solutions Over Empty Criticism

The OBA conveniently ignores the global factors driving inflation, instead choosing to mislead Bermudians for political gain.

  • Payroll Tax Relief: The PLP has delivered payroll tax cuts for 86% of Bermudians.

  • Health Premium Stability: Government health premiums have been frozen for three consecutive years.

  • Energy Tax Reduction: Reduced energy taxes by 60%.

Healthcare: Constructive Action, Not Empty Attacks

While the OBA attacks the PLP’s progress on universal healthcare, they fail to present a clear alternative. Their response lacks cost projections or funding sources.

  • Expanding Healthcare Access: The PLP is already investing in mental health services and expanding HIP benefits.

  • Mental Health Support: $3.8 million dedicated to improving mental health services across Bermuda.

Housing with Wraparound Support

We welcome the OBA’s stated support for emergency shelters and transitional housing, but their response lacks long-term solutions.

  • Partnership with HOME Charity: The PLP has expanded transitional housing and mental health services.

  • Comprehensive Support: We recognize that housing solutions must include wraparound services, including mental health and employment programs.

Transparency and Accountability: Proven Track Record

The OBA continues to throw out vague accusations of corruption and inefficiency. However, their proposed governance measures — such as public reporting, financial responsibility, and anti-corruption policies — are largely symbolic.

  • Existing Oversight: Bermuda already has strong transparency and accountability measures, including:

    • Independent oversight from the Auditor General.

    • Scrutiny by the Bermuda Police Service.

    • Internal Audit processes.

    • Regular public reporting — all under the PLP Government.

Our Commitment: Real Solutions for All Bermudians

Despite the OBA’s attacks, the PLP remains focused on delivering real solutions that improve the lives of Bermudians.

  • We will continue to invest in our people.

  • We will continue to strengthen our economy.

  • We will continue to build a Bermuda that works for all, not just a privileged few.
