The Choice Before Us: A Government for the Many or the Few

A Fairer Bermuda: The Choice Before Us in This Election

By E. David Burt, JP, MP - Premier of Bermuda & Leader, Progressive Labour Party

On January 31, Bermuda took another step forward in its democratic journey as candidates were officially nominated for the upcoming General Election. This moment marked the beginning of an important national conversation about the direction of our island and the leadership best equipped to take us forward.

I am proud to say that the Progressive Labour Party is fielding a record number of female candidates—the highest for any political party in Bermuda’s history. We are also presenting next-generation leaders like Alexa Lightbourne, Shomari Talbot-Woolridge, Iesha Musson, and Mischa Fubler, who are ready to bring fresh ideas and new energy to a team of seasoned veterans with experience and wisdom.

For me, this election holds special significance as it will be my last as Leader of the Progressive Labour Party. The past seven years have been challenging—Bermuda, like the rest of the world, has navigated the worst global pandemic in a century, economic turmoil, and major wars that have driven the highest global inflation in 40 years.

These are difficult times, and we in the PLP understand the pain Bermudians are feeling. But despite these challenges, we have made steady progress:

✅ Stabilising the economy
✅ Balancing the budget
✅ Rebuilding tourism
✅ Creating jobs
✅ Reducing taxes for working families

Bermuda is on a path toward a fairer and more prosperous future.

Delivering for Bermudians

In spite of global economic hardships, the PLP has worked to improve the lives of Bermudians by:

✔️ Introducing a Living Wage – ensuring that no Bermudian is underpaid
✔️ Cutting taxes for working families – putting more money back in your pocket
✔️ Expanding access to affordable housing – making homeownership more attainable
✔️ Investing in education & healthcare – because every Bermudian deserves access to quality services

But we know that too many Bermudians still feel left behind. That’s why our next term will focus on:

🔹 Opening a Senior Daycare Centre – supporting our aging population
🔹 Adding a free primary care visit under HIP & a specialist visit under FutureCare – improving healthcare access
🔹 Expanding affordable housing – ensuring more Bermudians can own a home
🔹 Reducing taxes & fees – making daily life more affordable
🔹 Supporting community-owned markets – lowering household expenses

The Choice is Clear

This election is a choice between:

🟢 Steady Progress with the PLP
🔴 Going Backwards with the OBA & other parties

The PLP is the only party offering a detailed, achievable vision for Bermuda’s future. Meanwhile, the OBA offers no real plan to grow our economy, lower the cost of living, or create opportunities for Bermudians.

The OBA’s response? An 8-page pamphlet with no solutions. Their C36 candidate, Carl Neblett, openly admitted he had “no idea” how they would lower the cost of living.

We cannot afford to gamble with our future.

A Team That Works for You

The PLP team blends experience with new energy, including record-breaking female representation. Our candidates are business owners, educators, and community leaders—people who understand the struggles Bermudians face and are ready to take action.

Other parties have no real plan. They would take us backwards, undoing the steady progress we have made. Only the PLP has the vision, experience, and commitment to continue building a fairer Bermuda.

A Bermuda for the Many, Not Just the Few

This election is about fairness, stability, and progress.

🔹 A Bermuda where everyone—no matter their background—can afford to live, work, and retire with dignity.
🔹 A Bermuda where economic success benefits all, not just a privileged few.
🔹 A government that is transparent, accountable, and always working for the people.

On February 6, I encourage every Bermudian to pay attention, ask questions, and engage in this important conversation about our future. The PLP’s platform launch will be a moment to look ahead—to see the kind of Bermuda we can build together.

We have overcome many challenges before. Now, together, we must build a fairer Bermuda for all of us.
