Building a Fairer Bermuda: Valuing Our Seniors and Caregivers

Neville Tyrrell, JP, MP Constituency #26, Warwick South Central

Good Day, Bermuda 🇧🇲

You know, when we talk about caring for our seniors, we’re not just talking about platform promises. We’re talking about people. We’re talking about our mothers and fathers, our grandparents, our aunts and uncles. We’re talking about the people who taught us, who raised us, who worked hard their entire lives to build a better Bermuda for all of us.

And here’s the thing: caring for our seniors isn’t just about them—it’s about us, too. It’s about the sons and daughters who are trying to juggle work and family responsibilities while making sure their aging parents are safe and cared for. It’s about the caregivers—many of them women—who dedicate their lives to looking after others but are too often underpaid and undervalued. It’s about creating a system that works for everyone.

That’s why the PLP is taking action:

  1. Increasing Caregiver Payments: 💰
We’re increasing caregiver payments and making sure that support is fair and based on the level of care required. We are going to make sure that caregivers get the compensation they deserve, based on the real work they’re doing.

  2. Eliminating Payroll Tax for Self-Employed Caregivers: 🚫💼
Think about that for a second. These are people who dedicate their lives to helping our most vulnerable. We will be taking that burden off their backs, putting money back into their pockets, and making caregiving a more sustainable career.

  3. Making Home Care More Affordable and Reliable: 🏡
We know that when caregiver payments are delayed, families suffer. Seniors suffer. So we are fixing the system to ensure that payments are made on time—every time. No more waiting, no more uncertainty.

  4. Cutting Red Tape for Accessory Dwelling Units: ✂️🧱
Right now, if you want to build an extra unit for an aging parent or modify your home to make caregiving easier, you’re stuck dealing with too many hurdles. That’s just not right. We are going to streamline the approval process for accessory dwelling units so that families can create the space they need, without all the hassle.

Now, I want to be clear about something. Every single one of us, at some point in our lives, is going to have to deal with this. We’re going to have a loved one who needs care. Or one day, we’re going to need that care ourselves.

The question is: what kind of Bermuda do we want to live in?

Do we want a Bermuda that, at the first sign of difficult times tells our seniors “tough luck?” Do we want a Bermuda where families are struggling, where caregivers are undervalued, where seniors are left behind?

Or do we want a Bermuda where we take care of each other? Where families have the support they need? Where caregivers are respected and fairly paid? Where our seniors can live with dignity, comfort, and security?

Well, I know which one I want. And I know which one the PLP is fighting for. We believe in a fairer Bermuda for all of us. A Bermuda where seniors are valued, caregivers are supported, and families are not left to struggle alone. That’s the future we’re building. And with your support, we’re going to make it happen.

Thank you. 🙏
