Criminal Justice - PLP Accomplishments

  1. Established a parliamentary committee to examine the events of December 2nd.
  2. Established a Commission of Inquiry into Land Grabs.
  3. Appointed a Gang Violence Reduction Coordinator to focus on implementing programmes to reduce gang violence and antisocial behaviour. 
  4. Expanded the Gang Resistance Education and Training Programme through all public Primary 6 and first year middle school levels.
  5. Established Redemption Farms.
  6.  Worked with the private sector to place young people who want a way out of gangs into the workforce.
  7. Decriminalised cannabis possession for amounts under 7 grams to ensure that young people are not prevented from future opportunities due to non-violent drug possession.
  8. Allowed licensed medical practitioners to prescribe their patients medicinal cannabis to address legitimate health issues.
  9. Passed legislation to expunge the criminal records of those found guilty of non-violent cannabis possession.
  10. Removed compulsory military service or “conscription” from the laws of Bermuda.
  11. First Government to give public notifications for the release of high-risk sex offenders.
  12. Granted transferred from the Bermuda Police Service to the Royal Bermuda Regiment responsibility for inshore maritime patrolling.
  13. Creation of the Bermuda Coast Guard.
  14. Modernised the Liquor Licensing Act to remove red tape.
  15. Reformed Legal Aid to increase the availability of legal assistance while minimising costs.
