Press Statement from the Progressive Labour Party (PLP)
For Immediate Release
The Bermuda Progressive Labour Party (PLP) welcomes fair and constructive criticism, as it plays a vital role in maintaining the high standards of governance that the people of Bermuda deserve. However, recent publications by TNN have raised significant concerns regarding journalistic standards and ethical reporting practices.
Recently, there has been a series of false and misleading stories published by TNN, which have not only failed to meet basic standards of accuracy but have also demonstrated a concerning lack of commitment to fair and balanced reporting. These stories have misrepresented facts and contributed to the dissemination of misinformation, thereby eroding public trust.
-
Lack of Fact-Checking:
In journalism, the importance of fact-checking cannot be overstated. The PLP expects that all news outlets adhere to the highest standards of accuracy and reliability. TNN’s failure to verify the accuracy of their stories before publication has resulted in the spread of false information that has misled the public. -
Failure to Provide Opportunity for Response:
Despite the seriousness of the allegations made in these stories, the PLP was not afforded the opportunity to respond or correct the facts prior to publication. This not only goes against the ethical standards of journalism but also violates the basic principle of fairness. Responsible journalism requires that all parties involved be given the chance to present their side of the story, ensuring that the public receives a balanced view. -
Over-Reliance on Anonymous Sources:
The reliance on anonymous sources, particularly those with seemingly questionable motives, is a troubling trend that undermines the credibility of any news outlet. When sources remain unnamed, it is the duty of the journalist to exercise heightened scrutiny to ensure the information provided is factual and not simply an attempt to manufacture controversy.
As stated previously, the reports of occurrences at the Party’s Central Committee Meetings are false. The most recent report surrounding the candidate selection for Constituency 15 is also inaccurate.
The PLP is committed to engaging with the media in a manner that promotes factual and responsible reporting. We urge TNN to review their practices and adhere to the principles of ethical journalism.
