Statement from MP Michael Weeks in Response to John Seymour’s Remarks

Real Leadership, Real Service: A Response to John Seymour

It is unfortunate that OBA candidate John Seymour, a newcomer to both our community and the political arena, has chosen to resort to unfounded accusations rather than engage in a constructive dialogue about the real issues facing Pembroke East Central.

His tweet suggesting that I am "lazy" lacks both substance and understanding of the hard work that goes into public service.

Public Service Is About Results, Not Cheap Shots

True leadership is not about empty rhetoric or staged photo opportunities—it’s about delivering tangible results.

The residents of Pembroke East Central are not fooled by baseless attacks; they know that leadership involves:

✅ Rolling up one’s sleeves
✅ Actively listening to the community
✅ Diligently working to improve the lives of those we serve

Let’s take a moment to reflect on just a few of the achievements that demonstrate my commitment to this constituency:

Delivering for Pembroke East Central

🏫 Initiated funding for a new lighting system at Victor Scott Primary School field, ensuring a safe, well-lit environment for community organizations, sports clubs, and churches.

📅 Host monthly constituency clinics at Victor Scott Primary School for C16 voters and residents.

🍽️ During COVID-19, I worked in collaboration with C11 and C15 to provide 300 meals weekly in partnership with Supermart Limited.

📚 Donate books to Victor Scott Preschool and volunteer to read to children.

🎓 Actively partner with nontraditional education providers to help young people achieve their GED qualifications.

☕ Host an annual Seniors’ Tea to honour and celebrate our elders.

🎒 Organize an annual Back-to-School event at Victor Scott Primary, distributing hundreds of backpacks and school supplies to children in need.

🥫 Provide food donations to families and coordinate an annual Christmas Turkey Giveaway.

🌍 Lead community cleanups in collaboration with Keep Bermuda Beautiful (KBB).

This is what real community service looks like.

Protecting Bermuda as Minister of National Security

Beyond my constituency, I serve as Minister of National Security, overseeing:

🚔 Customs
🚒 Fire Services
🛡️ Police & the Bermuda Regiment
✊ Gang Violence Reduction Team

Keeping Bermuda safe and addressing the root causes of crime is work that does not always make headlines, but it is vital for the well-being of our island and our communities.

Politics Should Be About Solutions, Not Theatrics

Politics is challenging, and it’s not uncommon for individuals to make sweeping statements in hopes of swaying public opinion.

But I urge Mr. Seymour and others to take the time to truly understand governance. There is no shame in being new to this arena—we all have to start somewhere. However, a commitment to learning and genuine engagement with the issues will serve him—and our community—far better than misguided attacks.

📢 My door is always open to those who want to understand the challenges we face and contribute to real solutions.

But for those who seek to distract from progress with theatrics and baseless accusations—they will find no audience here.

Building a Fairer Bermuda Together

The people of Constituency 16, Pembroke East Central—and indeed, all of Bermuda—deserve leaders dedicated to progress and real change, not political games.

Let’s focus on what really matters:

✅ Enhancing the lives of our seniors
✅ Supporting our families and young people
✅ Strengthening our communities
✅ Taking action to Build a Fairer Bermuda

The PLP remains committed to delivering for the people—not just talking, but taking action.
